Rossglass

Super Saints

As the cold summer sun shone brightly over the Killyleagh pitch on Saturday, Saintfield United 3rds had some bright sparks of their own that certainly helped warm the chilly air.

After last weekís impressive result the Saints were keen to keep that momentum building and after a tense first half, they kicked on in the second and recorded an even more impressive victory.

The match started at a slow pace as both sides were getting a feel for the opposition as well as adjusting to the brisk air, but it was the Saints that struck first to lift the freeze. After some nice work in the middle of the park from Chris Orr and Mike Carson the ball was slid out to Josh Barr on the left-wing, he took one touch before swinging in a perfect cross for Jonny Orr to caress past the keeper and into the Rossglass net. 1-0 but that did not light the torch paper as Rossglass gave as good as they got for the next 25 minutes, with both sides creating chances they will have wanted to have done better with. However, after 32 minutes the Saints took control, with Chris Orr leading the way with the next three goals. The first of the three was a thing of beauty, as he picked the ball up all of 30 yards out with his back to goal, not much looked to be on. Chris had other ideas, taking one touch to turn and the second to set himself and the third to hammer a left-footed shot whizzing into the top left-hand corner of the net.

2-0 was how it stayed until half time, although with the Saints taking the foot off the gas it allowed Rossglass to create at least two excellent opportunities only to be denied.

With the end to the half not to the Saints managements liking, a rousing team talk woke the team back up and it didnít take long for the players to kick it up a few gears. In fact, it took all of 2 minutes into the second half as Chris Orr was nicely on hand to convert from 6 yards out after a cross from Mike Carson somehow bobbled its way to the back post where Chris couldnít miss.

4 minutes later and the Saints dominance was confirmed as was Chris Orrís hat-trick, this time thanks to his own hard work. A pass forward from Duncan Spence was latched onto by Chris, he turned, beat a few defenders on his way into the box before whistling another left-footed drive past the keeper and into the goal.

From that point, Chris passed the baton onto Mike Carson, who was more than happy to take it and within the next 17 minutes Mike had a hat-trick of his own. The first of his three came via a lovely through ball from Jonny Orr, Mike timed his run to perfection and as he homed in on the goal, gave the keeper the eyes, sat him down and rolled the ball into the corner of the net. 4 minutes later along came Mikeís second, this time he reaped the rewards of Chrisís hard work as Chris pressured a Rossglass defender and then the keeper into mistakes and as he nicked the ball away from the keeper Mike was on hand to slide the ball into the vacant net.

The Hat-trick duly arrived in the 67th minute, with this goal taken straight from the Messi handbook! Chris again supplied the pass, but with Mike receiving the ball outside the box with 5 defenders to beat, it was all Mikeís own work. He weaved one way then the other as the side-line thought they were watching strictly on a Saturday night, but this dance ended with a jink past the keeper and a delicate left-footed finish.

The Saints werenít done just yet as a minute later they made it 8-0, with Mike again breaking the offside trap before allowing teammate Matthew Haughey to catch up, take the pass 6 yards out and convert it past the keeper.

More opportunities did come the way of the Saints with substitute Eddie Muldrew disappointed not to add at least one more, but it wasnít to be and the resulted ended with a very impressive 8-0 victory.
