Saints Fly to Victory

Saintfield travelled to Dromara on Saturday 8th February for the much anticipated return match against Dromara Village 3rds, with the previous encounter falling foul of the weather.

The weather was again the key player on this day, although this time it wasn’t enough to see the match abandoned but rather just play its part in a windswept affair.

The Saintfield management team were deep in discussion as they stood on the sideline with 10 minutes to kick-off, the debate raging as to whether the ref was going to allow the match to go ahead and if so should they get some weights to tie down manager Curtis McClements for fear of him being whisked away into the neighbouring field with one of the gusts of wild winds blowing across the pitch.

The ref came out, did his checks and decided it was good to go ahead.

That aforementioned wind took centre stage for the first 30 minutes as both sides tried to adjust to the conditions, with any ball that was played over head height taking a mind of its own and sprawling in all directions. This was highlighted in the 15th minute when a Michael Stoneman corner was floated in from the right-hand side, he may claim it was a piece of magic but I think everyone else would say it was the wind that carried the ball past all the players and the keeper only to crash off the crossbar and out to safety.

Chances were few and far between but after 37 minutes it was Dromara who made their first clear chance count. When the Saints lost the ball in the Dromara box it was the home team that sprang into action the quickest with a long ball to the left-wing allowing their striker to make a run down the line before squaring a ball to the back post where their other striker was on hand to tap home from 6 yards out.

It was a sucker punch for the Saints who, whilst hadn’t created many chances, were largely in control with the match being played mainly in the Dromara half.

But if that wasn’t a blow for the Saints they were certainly licking their wounds only 60 seconds later as the weather once again reared its head to assist with Dromara’s second goal. This time it was a shot from all of 30 yards out that, by all accounts, looked like it was heading over, however, the wind had other ideas as it caught the ball and pulled it towards goal. Keeper McCavera was backpedalling and done well to get a hand to the ball to divert it onto the crossbar, in that millisecond the Saints went to breath a sigh of relief. Alas, it wasn’t to be as the ball cannoned off the bar straight onto McCavera’s back and into the net, much to the keeper’s despair.

Finally, the Saints realised they needed to up their game if they wanted to have any chance of coming away with even a point, and that is exactly what they did.

In the 42nd minute they struck back, a quick passing move was finished with a slick through ball by Andy Moore, it was met with a perfectly timed run by Jonny Orr. Jonny was the calmest man on the pitch as he took a touch, rounded the keeper and slid the ball into the empty net.

2-1 and it was the lifeline the Saints needed just before half time. With a frank discussion held at halftime, the Saints knew what was required and how they delivered.

With the winds still howling the Saints took the ball to the deck, resulting in a well won free-kick in the 52nd minute. The resulting free-kick was perfectly crossed into the box by Birthday boy Andrew Gourley and it was met by his centre back partner Zach Doyle who nutmegged the keeper in the process of making it 2-2.

4 minutes later the Saints were at it again and it was the other Orr that was on target this time. Again, another quick passing move led to Stoneman playing captain Peter Kelly in down the right-hand side of the box, his cross found its way to Chris Orr at the back post. As many will know Chris’s left foot holds a place dear to manager Curtis McClement’s heart and it didn’t let him down once again. Chris took a touch then unleashed his weapon. 3-2 and the Saints had turned the game on its head.

3 minutes later the Saints put some daylight between themselves and the home team, Stoneman this time making no mistake with his finish.

Chris Orr turned provider as he clipped a lovely ball over the defence for the onrushing Stoneman, he took the ball in his stride, opened out his body and curled a delightful right-footed finish past the keeper.

Whilst that goal allowed the Saints to relax slightly they still pressed for more, but just couldn’t convert and were left to see out a nervy ending.

In the 81st minute, a crazy 30 seconds of half clearances met with gale force winds lead to the ball eventually dropping in the Saints 18-yard box, what came next was a piece of brilliance that deserved to win the match (but didn’t). The Dromara striker not only rounded off his hattrick but he did it with a delightful overhead kick.

The last 9 minutes were now a battle of wills as Dromara pushed for the equaliser and the Saints looked to catch them on the counter-attack. However, neither paid dividends as the match ended 4-3 and the windswept Saints flew home with the 3 points.
