With a strong wind hampering Saintfield's efforts to sustain any attacking play in the first half, any lapses in concentration by the visitors were always likely to be costly. Midway through the first half this proved to be the case, as Castlewellan pounced on some loose passing in the Saints midfield, before a composed finish gave them the lead.
Any hopes this young Saintfield side had of turning the conditions to their advantage in the second half were dented less than five minutes into the restart, when defensive confusion inside the penalty area presented Castlewellan with their second.
As the half progressed Saintfield finally grew into the game, with the young central midfield duo of Matt Boyle and Mark Gregg in particular having a greater influence. The greater intensity and pressure was eventually rewarded by a fine Christy McGuire looping header from an Oliver Duff cross. Any momentum this created was short-lived however, as defensive hesitation gifted Castlewellan their third. Castlewellan's fourth - a fine lobbed finish from outside the area - sealed the game shortly afterwards, but Gregg's superb 20 yard half volley to reduce the deficit to 2, kept the last 10 minutes interesting.
