At a windswept and cold Carrigenagh Road, Saintfield III's - this week a good blend of youth and experience - took control of the game from the start, although the conditions made it difficult to play any sustained passing football. It was therefore somewhat predictable that their opening goal would come from a set piece, with Matt Boyle nodding in Oliver Duff's corner at the far post half way through the first half.
Although Ballyvea's forays into the Saints half were sporadic, Lee Young did have to produce some fine saves to protect the lead, before the home side pulled level 15 minutes from half time with a smartly placed finish from inside the penalty area. The visitors deservedly regained the lead shortly after, however, as Duff's astute overhead kick found the net from 8 yards out.
The second half continued in a similar pattern to that of the first, with Saints controlling the game and limiting the home side to occasional counter-attacks. Again their dominance didn't translate to the score sheet but just as it seemed that they would see the game out for a much needed 3 points, Ballyvea made the most of a needlessly conceded free-kick with a few minutes to go, converting it directly from 20 yards out to draw level again.
The late drama wasn't over, however, as Saintfield were awarded a penalty in the last minute following a trip on Boyle as he drove at the Ballyvea defence. McCavera's penalty - literally the last kick of the game - was well saved, leaving the visitors departing the Mournes considering the result as 2 points lost rather 1 gained, not just because of the late disappointment.
