Saintfield Utd

Saintfield made their first away trip of the new season, returning with 3 points, 10 goals and a clean sheet to make it the perfect 10 star performance.

It was once again a quick fire start for the Saints as they took the lead within 30 seconds thanks to the returning Jonny Orr. A well worked corner was flicked on at the front post by Jack Brown and at the second attempt Jonny Orr drove an effort towards goal. The pace of the ball ensuring the defender on the line couldn’t do anything to stop the ball crossing the line.

The next 25 minutes saw an onslaught on the Ballyhalbert goal, however the home team dug deep and with some great last ditch tackles and top drawer saves from the Ballyhalbert keeper the score line remained 1-0.

However, the home team’s resilience was broken again in the 26th minute as Sam Simpson added the Saints second of the afternoon. Sam would not be known for his goal scoring but as the ball was half cleared following a corner from Andy Moore, Sam was the quickest to react, storming onto the ball and smashing a 25 yard drive past the outstretched right hand of the keeper and into the net.

That second goal sparked the Saints into overdrive, with the third goal added 6 minutes later. On this occasion it was last week’s hero Mike Carson that converted the chance. He took a pass from Jonny Orr before skipping past two Ballyhalbert defenders and caressing a left footed effort into the bottom corner.

3-0 was the way it remained until half time when the Saints took a well-deserved break and regrouped for an all-out assault in the second half.

With 51 minutes on the clock the Saints added a fourth, this time from the spot after a powerful run by Mike Carson was abruptly ended by the keeper as he skipped by him in the box. Up stepped captain and penalty taker Jonny Orr and he made no mistake as he sent the keeper the wrong way to add his second of the game.

The fifth followed soon after, 5 minutes later to be exact, and whilst the Saints midfielder Lorcan Speier will still be claiming it this time next year, it was an OG after his shot was diverted into his own net by the Ballyhalbert defender.

5 became 6 in the 60th minute with Mike Carson doubling his tally for the afternoon. This goal was all down to the brilliance of Craig Millar, picking the ball up on the half way line before beating 3 Ballyhalbert defenders and sliding a left footed pass into the path of Mike. The rest was simple, as from 4 yards out and with an empty net Mike couldn’t miss.

In the 69th minute Mike rounded off another great days work as he added the Saints seventh and completed his hattrick in fine style.

A great cross from the left wing by Andy Moore somehow evaded everyone and reached Mike at the back post, he steadied himself before rattling a right footed drive into the opposite corner of the net. A great finish from the Saints striker and one he was very pleased with as he took his tally to 5 in two games.

Andy Moore then decided he wanted in on the goal scoring action, added another two goals for the Saints within the next 15 minutes. The first was down to some quick movement as Andy reacted the quickest in the box to poke home a Sam Simpson cross.

Andy’s second was right out of the top drawer, he took a cross field pass from Matty Stewart, shifted the ball onto his left foot and from 25 yards out curled a beauty into the top left corner of the net. That made it 9-0 to the Saints and they soon added the tenth and final goal of the match in the 88th minute.

Josh Barr has threatened to score for at least two seasons now and Saturday was the day he did it, as he arrived late at the back post to steer home another great Sam Simpson cross.

10 - 0 and a great day all round for the Saints and a mention also has to go to Ballyhalbert who stuck at it the whole game and made sure the Saints had to work hard for every goal.
